Downtown Porland, OR

Monday August 7, 2017

This was Jean and Gary's last day with us and we decided to do some things in the downtown. Our first stop was The Oregon Historic Society. We were able to get caught up on Oregon history and to visit an Oregon Historic Society special showing on John F Kennedy, with particular emphasis on his connections to Oregon.
We then visited Powell's Books, which is always a required stop when we are in Portland. It is always a place that never changes very much. (in a good way)
After our stop at Powell's, we opted for an early dinner at another Thai Restaurant, PaaDees. Very good food and of course good company. Thai food is a favorite of Jean, Gary and Ron, as we have all spent time in Thailand. Jean and Gary during their time in the Peace Corp and Ron during his time in the Air Force.
Then it was back to Ann's home to spend several hours on the deck with a couple of bottles of wine and fun stories to recount from our days in Nebraska.

The homeless situation in Portland is a very large problem and is being addressed in many different ways by different entities. The mayor of Portland opened the city to unrestricted "camping" and The UCC Church, First Congregational, is handling it in a far different way.

Day Three

" Home Sweet Home" Welcome Let The Light Shine In Living Room From The Loft Living Room Double Bed Room (Ron & Dona's Room) First Bed Room (Ann's Room) Kitchen And Sitting Room Dinner Our Neighbor, Kilmelkedar Church Today dawned very foggy and rainy. Really took our time lounging around during the morning. Left the house around 11:00 am and went into Dingle. Ron managed to drive the whole way without scrapping against the bushes along the very narrow road! Today is just for shopping and seeing some of the shops and craft stores around Dingle. Spent some time at Dingle Crystal and have made an appointment for tomorrow morning to see a demonstration of Sean working. After that we plan to take the Dingle loop drive around the peninsula. I would like to tell you a little bit about our house. The main part of the house has four rooms that are in a straight line. First is a small bedroom which opens out to the main living room. This living room has a peat burning sto...

Upcoming Trip To Ireland

As most of you know, Dona, Ann (Dona's sister) and I will be traveling to Ireland from February 16th to February 27th. We will be staying in one location for our entire trip and taking day trips out from our "home" base. We are staying in a self catering cottage called the Rambling House, which is over 200 years old. It is located at Kilmalkedar which is 5 miles from Dingle Town, Co. Kerry. See the links next to this posting. The weather should be okay; temps in the 50's, but with the promise of rain and mist. However, the number of tourists will be way down this time of year. We plan to spend a lot of time exploring castles, monastic sites, old forts, etc. Also on the agenda are considerable nights in the local pubs listening to traditional Irish music. Dingle is one of the great centers for this. Of course, Ron will be spending many hours every day taking pictures, which we will share with everyone. We have access to an internet cafe in Dingle, so we are planning on...
